A Lannister Always Pays for Downtime: Game of Thrones Crashes on HBO Now

Downtime Is Coming to HBO, Proving the Need for a Robust IT Disaster Recovery Plan

If you’ve been trying to convince your CEO or colleagues of the vital importance of having a strong IT Disaster Recovery Plan, last night’s Game of Thrones episode has just made the case for you.

As the much anticipated “Battle of the Bastards” episode became available on HBO Now, subscribers got a rude awakening when the streaming service crashed. This is the second time this season that the service failed to keep up with demand. Back in April, the Game of Thrones season 6 premiere was also temporarily unavailable on HBO’s streaming service. And just as winter descends from beyond the wall, many foresee even more downtime coming soon.

More than 40 minutes into the outage, HBO Now tweeted, “We’re aware members are experiencing technical difficulties tonight. We hope to resolve this ASAP. Please follow @hbonowhelp for updates.” But ASAP wasn’t soon enough for GoT fans.

The onslaught of angry frustration was almost as difficult to ward off as wildlings attempting to breach the wall. Nothing seemed to quell the fire in their hearts.
